A Word From Peter

The term “In Vino Veritas” is glibly quoted and mostly interpreted as “the truth be said when the wine is flowing". Historically this has been extended to support the urban legend that some Germanic peoples always drank wine while holding council, as they believed nobody could lie effectively after too much alcohol.

Personally I have a different viewpoint on “In Vino Veritas”. There are few consumable products as tightly controlled and protected as wine. Our official wine analysis protocol and clearance certificates surpasses the control on the majority of food products. But perhaps the most profound truth in wine is that the consumer is very quick to relay personal preference in terms of purchase response. Historically our best bottlings have always been rewarded with upward trading patterns and no candidly the converse applies as well! Hopefully wine collectors and wine lovers themselves represent the largest voting lobby relating to performance but no doubt the fringe industry of wine competitions carries some weight in influencing where to capture and purchase the winning wines. The only problem with competitions is that they highlight the blossoming moment in a wines life and do not reflect consistency of a particular wineries overall calibre and performance. This is where the “SA Wine Index” comes into play. The SAWi has now presented six years of results in a system which captures a wineries continuous performance and accolades and transforms these into a score. This is achieved by converting its success through algorithms into a tabulated score. It is this score which irons out the occasional trophy winners from the repetitive star performers! We were thrilled to receive five awards including the Top Pinot Noir Cultivar award; the Top Red Blend (unusual) award and furthermore being named the number two Top Overall Wine Producer of the Year.

Our latest white and red signature vintages from 2015, 2013 and 2012 – years with wildly varying weather conditions, make for intriguing results. These latest releases are now available from our cellar door. 2015 Sauvignon Blanc Reserve. Last produced in 2012, this vintage has been created from two standalone tanks of Sauvignon Blanc, complemented by blending in 14.8% Semillon. It is a rare gem, with a limited run of only 6000 bottles. A comfortable balance between fruit maturity and accommodating acid balance has been achieved in the final crafting of our 2015 Walker Bay Sauvignon Blanc. 2013 is the latest release of our Missionvale Chardonnay - our flagship white and our only domain Chardonnay. Pinot Noir remains our distinctive calling card, with the 2013 vintage representing the 21st edition of Galpin Peak Pinot Noir from the property. 2012 meanwhile turned out to be a fine vintage year for the Tête de Cuvée Galpin Peak Pinot Noir. Our iconic wine presents a cameo selection of the top 12 Pinot Noir barrels from any particular vintage.



Recent Achievements

SAWi 2015

Following on from previous years success's, we were once again recognised as one of South Africa’s top wine producers at the 2015 South African Wine Index (SAWi) awards ceremony, which was held at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve on 20 June 2015. Now in its sixth year, the SAWi Awards have become known as a showcase of the best of the best of South African wines, supporting excellence in wine making as the catalyst for progress and development. We are thrilled to have received five awards which include the Top Pinot Noir Cultivar award for our Galpin Peak Pinot Noir, as well as the Top Red Blend (unusual) award for our celebrated Italian/French red blend, Hannibal and furthermore being named the number two Top Overall Wine Producer of the Year – which is a remarkable achievement for a small winery. Sommeliers Choice Awards

The inaugural 'The Sommeliers Selection' wine competition selected both our Tête de Cuvée Pinot Noir 2012 and Missionvale Chardonnay 2013 for the selection’s recommended wine list. The Sommeliers Selection is the first South African wine competition judged solely by a panel of South Africa’s top sommeliers, blind tasted by leading members of the South African Sommeliers Association (SASA).

 




Tutored Tastings

Our Tutored Tastings are still firm favourites on our supporters calendar's. Previously these tastings have been limited to Cape Town and Gauteng, however we decided to venture out to the Stellenbosch winelands and Cavalli was the setting for our inaugural tasting. A wine enthusiasts dream as we poured vintage wines from our Reserve Sauvignon blancs and 9 vintages of Galpin Peak, Têté de Cuvee and Cape Winemakers Guild Pinot noirs could be tasted and compared with tasty nibbles served from Cavalli. In June we brought our tasting home, hosted on our Estate. A similar line up of wines was presented but included vintages of our domaine flagship Chardonnay, Missionvale. A local favourite, Oskars deli provided the 'mini' meals such as creamy wild mushroom risotto and hearty deboned oxtail paired with each flight, a real treat as the fire crackled, wines appreciated and stomach's warmed. A Word from Lia on home ground

The last three months have been incredibly stimulating and busy and my focus was on one of our most important markets, the UK, which is my home for now. I had the wonderful opportunity to show our wines to the London Business School's annual Gala dinner in April. The Summit's theme was 'Freedom Day' and our Missonvale Chardonnay and Galpin Peak Pinot Noir were enjoyed by current and new admirers. Soon afterwards, I traveled to Manchester to support Gerrard Seel WineMerchant. Following their visits to SA, they were eager to launch their new SA portfolio to their private and on trade consumers. Nature Walk sightings

The on-going campaign to remove alien invasive plants is paying a rich dividend. A recent foray by our local botanist Mr Frank Woodvine and a small botanical group revealed 8 more indigenous species previously unrecorded. This makes an impressive total of 330 collected to date from 100 ha of mountain fynbos, comparing favourably with the 1 500 species found in the British Isles.

A spin off benefit is improving the habitat for wildlife. For instance, their seems to be an increase in the porcupine population as the bulbs, roots, tubers etc. which form their food source are now flourishing in cleared areas. Similarly, clearing the wetland has meant riverine species now flourish, improving conditions for small antelope such as the grysbok. Sommeliers Association Tasting

The South African Sommeliers Association (SASA) has established itself as an integral part of the food and wine industry in South Africa. The movement was started in 2010 when a group of the same minded individuals got together in the hope of forming an association to help uplift and promote the service of wine in South Africa. We will be hosting a tasting to the associations members on the 24th August.




Cape Wine 2015

Join trade visitors and journalists from around the world and take advantage of the ideal opportunity to get up close and personal with South Africa’s wines and winemakers. Visitors will have double the opportunity to taste our award-winning range of wines this year at Cape Wine - 15 - 17 September, held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The Bouchard Finlayson stand number is H85 and we also join the Hemel-en-Aarde Winegrowers Association at our group stand on O104.



Cape Winemakers Guild 2015

The 2015 Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction, the Guild’s 31st, will take place at Spier, Stellenbosch on Saturday 3rd October 2015 from 09:00. Peter Finlayson, one of the 8 CWG founding members is proud to have produced the 2012 Pinot Noir and 2012 Chardonnay for this Auction. Further details info@capewinemakersguild.com.




Tutored Tasting

Our next and final Tutored Tasting for 2015 will be held in Cape Town (venue tba) on the 4 November at 18h00. This is one of those tastings that cannot be missed by the wine-enthusiast. Renowned Winemaker Peter Finlayson will lead the tasting of 12 wines as knowledge is shared and these wines explored. 4 flights of 3 wines each paired perfectly with delectable canapés.
