Harvest 2013 - Keeping our “Cool”

The privilege and adventure of producing fine wines has a great deal to do with the weather. Grapevines need water to grow but grapes need little water to ripen, which is a paradox, but here at the coast we face a balancing act where our weather welcomes us, each summer on a “wobbly tight rope”.

2013 has been navigated with care, at times the weather threatened to topple us but finally we kept our “cool”. Literally our “cool” and this has been a most welcome “cool” season with late ripening and excellent fruit. Patience prevailed and we waited for our fruit to reach optimal representation. The most significant feature of 2013 has been the unusually long winter of 2012 with the added challenge of a very wet October month! Wet Octobers yield vigorous growth which triggers problem plant pathology threats.

While this all sounds scary and marginally depressing it is in fact the very “appropriate” scenario we are looking for. Worldwide quality wine production is synonymous with marginal but cool climate conditions… The result being that not every vintage pleases, some are too “cool” for cool winemakers. The bottom line is we are not quite finished yet but so far all points to us looking forward to some very exciting prospective wines from this happy cool vintage!

Visitors

It is a welcome treat to receive Bouchard Finlayson fans, supporters and agents from all over the world. In the last three months we have been host to our agents from Denmark, Germany, Russia and the U.S.A as well as a visitor from France - Stephen Roberts who is involved in Riviera Kitchen, a Franco-American mix of media and culinary professionals on a mission to discover and re-interpret food from the French and Italian Riviera.

On separate occasions we enjoyed an evening braai with our agents from Russia - Marine Express - leading wine importers and distributors from St. Petersburg and our agents from USA - Indigo Wine Group - a national wine importing company, managing a network of distributors in 45 American states. Marine Express introduced us to 7 of their most loyal regional distributors. We look forward to welcoming a second group in April who represent Marine Express's off-trade clients from Saint-Petersburg and Moscow, accompanied by 2 chiefs from the off-trade departments.

Indigo Wine Group was represented by MD Johan Meissenheimer and newly appointed Regional Sales Manager for the North East, Stephen Duffy. They introduced us to acclaimed Opici Family Distributing, which is a family owned business steeped in history operating in 4 states and was represented by Michael J. Proch - Upstate New York, John Patric - New Jersey, Brian Lewis - Connecticut and Gianni Acireale – Florida.  The USA market is very sophisticated and 'spoiled' by an endless variety of wines from all over the world. We are very proud to be represented in this market by two well established and reputable companies!

The delectable food served at our functions is prepared by the charismatic Chef Stefan Otto, who's menus are planned and prepared to complement the range of Bouchard Finlayson wines and showcase our South African culture. After many years as part of the Red Carnation Hotels family, Stefan Otto moved back to Hermanus and assists with providing the most delicious meals for our visitors.

PR company appointment & Five Star Media event

Janie van der Spuy and her adept team from Five Star PR have commenced representing Bouchard Finlayson. Included in their portfolio are our two sister properties The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa and Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat. We look forward to engaging with the media in various events. Our first media function at our Homestead for 2013 took place on the 15th March to showcase our latest release white wine vintages tasted alongside older vintage examples. Click here to read more.

International Events

It is the time of the year to showcase our wines to an international audience! Peter Finlayson recently travelled to Dusseldorf for the leading International wine trade show ProWein, his first visit to the largest and most attended wine fair in the world to meet with our agents and customers, a perfect opportunity to nurture partnerships and research new one's. Four Bouchard Finlayson wines were available for tasting at the WOSA stand. Peter exclaims "The most rewarding impression from this trip was the constant endorsements and notable respect received for our wines. Very valuable accumulation of new contacts and information!" In May from the 20th to 22nd, Peter will attend the annual London International Wine Fair where Bouchard Finlayson’s wines will be presented by our UK agent Seckford Agencies Ltd,  stand L25.

Music Evenings

Our monthly music concerts, arranged by the Hermanus Music Society, continue to give rhythm and pace to not only the attendees of these soirées, but also to the barrels, which are being filled at this time of the year.  We feel privileged that we find ourselves in our tenth year of music concerts. Thank you to Hermanus Music Society for their continued contribution to the Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) Nedbank Protégée program.
