A Word From Peter

In sharp contrast with 2014 the 2015 vintage has been a thoroughly happy event. Our biggest surprise has been the very early commencement of this vintage, i.e 25th January, which mirrors the conditions experienced in 2004. Luckily, for Junior Winemaker Chris Albrecht, our interns arrived in time from the Northern Hemisphere countries of France and Canada. Katie has travelled all the way from Ontario to work with us this vintage. She is part of the team at a small vineyard and winery in Ontario’s Prince Edward County appellation, working in the cellar, lab and out in the vineyard whenever possible. She is also an ardent gardener, beekeeper and drinker of Pinot Noir. Remi joins us from the South of France where he is completing a degree in engineering and oenological studies. In addition to his schooling, he has worked a number of vintages in Bordeaux and also Chablis. When not working assiduously in the cellar, Remi likes to pursue his passion for bread, cheese and 'afternoon siestas'.

Summer conditions have been very dry leading to the presentation of near perfect fruit! Normally such dry weather conditions play liberally in favour of red wines, but the real judge of the overall quality rests in the hands of Bacchus who will show us his pack of cards once the fermentations are complete and the wines begin to clarify! For the present we have our fingers crossed that the latter part of the vintage presents the same happy flutters of excitement as produced by the early varieties. To celebrate the start of harvest the entire Bouchard Finlayson team were treated to a typical South African feast of Crayfish, whole lamb on the spit, boerewors and an array of delicious summer salads and fruit, followed by traditional 'melktert' hosted by our owner directors the Tollman family in the most perfect setting, The Homestead. The following day Vicki Tollman lent a hand in the harvesting of our popular Sauvignon blanc.

The Drinks Business - Global Pinot Noir Masters, March 2015

The Drinks Business held their Global Pinot Noir Masters blind tasting this month and success reigned for both our Pinot Noirs. Our Téte de Cuvée Pinot Noir 2012 received a Gold medal with one of the highest scores in the entire tasting. Their judges are notorious for being the toughest in the business with many wines failing to receive medals at all.

James went to South Africa in 1994 just after the end of apartheid to visit the vineyards, wineries and winemakers of the country and he has been enamored with the wines ever since. Last year in Hong Kong, James was invited to a daylong tasting of hundreds of South African wines available in the market, and was impressed by many of the wines.

Vintage Tastings

Over the past year Bouchard Finlayson has offered tutored tastings of older vintage wines to small groups across the country, broadening consumer knowledge of the incredible maturation potential of our wines. The BF team offer vintage tastings on a daily basis in our cellar door to our customers and ‘friends of Bouchard Finlayson’. Due to the exclusivity of our vintage tastings on offer, the varietal theme will vary according to the older vintage wines available as well as their taste profile accessibility. Our current theme is vintage Pinot noirs and includes 5 vintage Pinot noirs and a selection of deli nibbles of cheese, salami and crackers - maximum of 20 persons. Booking is essential. If you are interested in other vintage varietal tastings eg Chardonnay, unwooded whites, our Hannibal red blend then please contact the winery and we will tailor make a vintage tasting for you.

Nature walk excursion

Bouchard Finlayson has introduced a unique wine tasting excursion that combines a scenic guided nature walk through the 100 hectares of protected Fynbos on the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley wine farm, with a tasting of its latest vintages and a delicious Brunch Board to be enjoyed in the cellar or on the terrace overlooking the vineyards. The package is subject to availability and needs to be pre-booked.. The hikes are graded as the Yellow Route (45 minutes), Green Route (60 minutes) and the Red Route (a two and a half hour hike), and will be guided by Bouchard Finlayson’s very own resident amateur botanist, Frank Woodvine, an honorary member of Fernkloof Nature Reserve. With over 50 years of experience and accumulated knowledge of the Cape Floral Kingdom, he will offer captivating stories and interesting facts about the indigenous plants found on the farm and surrounding area.
