2012 Platter Guide Ratings for our Wines
Bouchard Finlayson’s 2012 Platter Guide Ratings
“The practical art of the wine maker ends with the bottling of his wines. From this moment on the wine becomes the creative province of the individual wine lover. The relationship between the wine and drinker may be simple or sophisticated. It may be a casual matter of the odd glass of wine over lunch, the occasional bottle with a good dinner, a passing but pleasurable acquaintance. Or it may be a deeper and fuller commitment. All aspects of wine and its cultur, from its history to its growing and making, from its storage to its presentation, and above all, its tasting and appreciation, may become areas of exploration and delight in their own right. The pleasure of wine may thus be developed with knowledge and experience into something more complex, rewarding and enduring, a lifetime’s pursuit.
As with art, music and literature, wine appreciation is a matter of aesthetics, for a Wine too has properties of balance, harmony and complexity. And like art, there are no simple equations which exist for its evaluation; the way to understand it is through conscious effort.”
- excerpt taken from “The complete book of South African wine” by John Kench, Phyllis Hands and David Hughes
The above excerpt introduces the multifaceted nature of wine and its appreciation. And although it is important that we partake in rated tastings, so that there is some form of measure for the wine lover at any level of wine appreciation to compare him-/herself to the judgments made on the wines at a certain point in time, we do also acknowledge that wine taste is a personal thing and we hope that in our selection of carefully handpicked grapes and handcrafted wines, you will find something that appeals to you – for the pleasure of drinking wines with story and soul is far greater on any level of wine appreciation!
